Regional title the Express & Star to launch paywall

West Midlands regional daily, the Express & Star, is to put its content behind a paywall with just a select few stories on the homepage remaining free.

This would make the Midland News Association owned title the first regional in the UK to attempt to make users pay for content.

According to Hold the frontpage the new premium part of Wolverhampton daily’s website will be sold to readers as part of a combined print and online subscription package.

Deputy editor Keith Harrison, said: “Other [regional publishers] have tried paywall content – some with varying results. I think the difference to what we’re doing is we’re not putting it behind the paywall as a standalone package.

“We’re not trying to sell this as a standalone, in competition to the hard copy paper. It’s a package to add value and help the overall circulation.”
