Hunt gives Murdoch BSkyB get out of competition jail for free card

If you were under the impression that the Tory-led government was not in hock to Rupert Murdoch’s vote winning news empire then it might be time to think again.

This morning culture and media secretary Jeremy Hunt has indicated he will consider undertakings in lieu from Murdoch’s News Corporation which if accepted would mean its proposed takeover of BSkyB (pdf) would not have to be referred to the Competition Commission. Andy Coulson has resigned – statement in full

It is being widely reported that a statement is due from No 10 later today regarding Andy Coulson. The speculation is that David Cameron’s director of communications is toast following fresh evidence emerging regarding the News of the World and phone hacking story.

How long has David Cameron’s communications chief Andy Coulson got left in his job?

News Corporation has always said that the phone hacking scandal was the work of a rogue reporter (you know like the lone gunman..), but this defence is now fast unravelling as Glenn Mulcaire, the private detective at the centre of the case, reveals that the paper’s head of news commissioned him to access voicemail messages. So not exactly rogue then, but more institutional, planned and organised?

News Corp bites back in hackgate with angry letter to New York Times

News Corporation has bitten back in progressing phone hacking saga and sent a letter to the New York Times following its investigation into the scandal. The paper’s story reignited interest in the illegal activities of Rupert Murdoch’s News of the World and Andy Coulson’s possible knowledge of that activity.

Well he doesn’t, but this story splashed on the front page of the Evening Standard today of David Cameron, wife Sam and new family addition probably encapsulates his attitude, and that of parts of the media (is there an unofficial blackout?), to the growing calls for a government inquiry into the swirl of allegations surrounding his director of comms, Andy Coulson, and the News of the World’s phone hacking.
