Court says PI must name phone hacking execs at News International

This could spell big trouble for some. The High Court has ordered the private investigator, Glenn Mulcaire, to reveal identity of executives at News International who commissioned him to hack Steve Coogan’s phone.

The Guardian reports that the court ruled that Mulcaire, the private investigator at the centre of the News of the World phone-hacking case, “could not refuse to answer questions about his work on the grounds of self-incrimination”. Metropolitan Police under fire over News of the World contacts

Politics Home has a good story that spells trouble for the Metropolitan Police regarding its rather too cosy relationship with the News of the World.

The Met had previously been accused of failing to properly investigate the phone hacking scandal, which has been reopened following fresh evidence coming to light including News International finding apparently ‘lost’ emails.

News International finds ‘lost’ emails that promise fresh evidence in hacking case

The Independent is reporting today that a file of emails has come to light from executives at News International. The emails date from the height of the phone-hacking scandal and what is significant is that these emails were previously reported as “lost” following a botched data transfer. Funny that.

The emails, which weren’t previously available to police, have been found as Rupert Murdoch’s British newspaper business comes under intense scrutiny as a fresh investigation into phone hacking at the News of the World gets underway. Andy Coulson has resigned – statement in full

It is being widely reported that a statement is due from No 10 later today regarding Andy Coulson. The speculation is that David Cameron’s director of communications is toast following fresh evidence emerging regarding the News of the World and phone hacking story.

News Corporation has always said that the phone hacking scandal was the work of a rogue reporter (you know like the lone gunman..), but this defence is now fast unravelling as Glenn Mulcaire, the private detective at the centre of the case, reveals that the paper’s head of news commissioned him to access voicemail messages. So not exactly rogue then, but more institutional, planned and organised?

David Cameron last night said that nobody on his team was unsackable, as he faced questions about his communications director, Andy Coulson, as the phone hacking scandal continues to hound the former News of the World editor.

News Corp bites back in hackgate with angry letter to New York Times

News Corporation has bitten back in progressing phone hacking saga and sent a letter to the New York Times following its investigation into the scandal. The paper’s story reignited interest in the illegal activities of Rupert Murdoch’s News of the World and Andy Coulson’s possible knowledge of that activity.

How Cameron and the Standard tackle growing row over Coulson and phone hacking

Well he doesn’t, but this story splashed on the front page of the Evening Standard today of David Cameron, wife Sam and new family addition probably encapsulates his attitude, and that of parts of the media (is there an unofficial blackout?), to the growing calls for a government inquiry into the swirl of allegations surrounding his director of comms, Andy Coulson, and the News of the World’s phone hacking.
